Young Ambassadors
Each year until 2012, School Sport Partnerships across England will recruit two young people to take on the role of Young Ambassador for two years. In their first year, they work in their local communities championing sport and the ethos and values of the Olympic and Paralympic movement. In the second year they take on a mentoring role with the new Young Ambassador intake.
By the time the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games reach these shores in 2012, more than 5,000 young people from across the UK will have been through the Young Ambassador programme, which is managed by the Youth Sport Trust on behalf of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF).
Half of all the Young Ambassadors, which this year will total 898, are selected due to their sporting talent, while the other half are chosen due to their outstanding commitment and ability as young leaders or volunteers.
During the day the students were exposed to an the inspirational speaking of Derek Redmond and David Hemery. They learnt about new initiatives in sport and PE, discovered the ideas and thought behind the legacy programmes and explored new innovations to take back to their schools.
The two students were given an opportunity to attend workshops, visit the facilities and explore the Get Set website whilst working with PDM and SSCo's; who were on site to offer guidance advise and inspiration.
The day was overwhelmingly positive, "I had a great time, its was really interesting and gave me loads of ideas" enthused Silver Ambassador Emmanuel.

Olympians attend Young Ambassador Training Day
Two Olympians and 25 pupils from across NE Hants attended the Young Ambassadors Training Day at The Connaught School on Tuesday 7th December.
The special guests were John Shaw, former Olympian from the Barcelona and Atalanta Olympics and Beth Storry who performed in Beijing 2008 and hopes to be at London 2012. Both guests gave inspirational presentations, discussing their career high and lows, influences and the emotions surrounding the Olympic games.
The training session that followed was delivered by the two NEHSSP Gold Ambassadors, Brad and Katherine and supported by SSCo's Andy Munnings and Melissa Pengelley
Most of the pupils who attended the day became Silver Ambassadors and
were joined by other gold and Platinum ambassadors from across the
partnership. They will all now work in their local communities
championing sport and the ethos and values of the Olympic and Paralympic
movement. The key role of the Silver Young Ambassador is to increase
the amount of participation for other young people in sport and physical
activity and promote healthy active lifestyles.
The students are now planning assemblies and festivals to be delivered at their schools and their feeder schools. The students performed the "YA" to promote the work they are doing and the up coming programmes. For more information visit http://yabritain.youthsporttrust.org/.
Students Visit Twickenham to become Young Ambassadors
Two NEHSSP students; Brad from Robert Mays and Katherine of Calthorpe Park attended the Young Ambassadors Conference at Twickenham on Tuesday 15th September with SSCo's Andy Munnings and Melissa Pengelly.
The full and exciting programme gave all four the opportunity to work alongside Olympians from both the Olympic and Paralympic Games. With presentations from Derek Redmond, Craig Heaps and Tim Pendergast (to name but a few) motivation and excitement came easy.
The students and SSCo's were given an opportunity to take part in workshops to further develop their understanding of the Young Ambassadors Programme and their roles as both ambassadors and mentors.
Since the date at Twickenham all Secondary Schools have nominated Silver Ambassadors and following a planning session at Calthorpe School, a training a day is soon to take place. The Young Ambassadors will be promoting the Olympic values, delivering assemblies and organising intra and inter school sport in our partnership schools. We are sure all NEHSSP schools will benefit as a result of this exciting programme.
