Farnborough College of Technology
Here at Farnborough College of Technology (FCOT) we have introduced sport into our enrichment program for the first time this year. Students are now offered a wide range of sporting activities free of charge on a weekly basis. Mark Treagust is the Further Education Sport Co-ordinator (FESCO) for FCOT.
This year we have opened our Beyond Fitness Gym facilities to students and now have 90 student memberships. We also have a class of 20 Foundation Entry Learning Students (FELS) who use the gym on a weekly basis.
At FCOT, students are provided with personal training programs from our Sport Degree students and provided with any assistance they may require. We have also set up a session for the girls to become involved in sport, an exercise to music class runs every wednesday between 3-4pm.
Away from the college we have set up a 5 a side football league at Farnborough Leisure Centre and have so far had 110 students take part. The league will run through to December and will begin again in January due to its levels of popularity.
We have also set up an enrichment activity for keen Basketball players, this runs on a weekly basis at the Farnborough Leisure Centre. From this group of players we will also be setting up a Basketball team to compete against other colleges.
Here at FCOT, I have also created a calender of college events throughout the year. The first of these events was held on the 21st October and was the 'Row to France' event. For this event each one of the colleges subject schools enteres a team of students to Row a combined total of 26.2 miles.
Each team competed against one another for the quickest time and after 8 hours of non stop rowing the school of engineering triumphed with an impressive time of 48minutes 58seconds. For this event we had over 120 students take part and managed to raise a total of £516.27 for the Help the Heroes cause. The plan was such a success that it has already been pencilled in for next year.
Next month we will be hosting a Children In Need Dodgeball tournament on the 18th November. We hope to have over 250 students in fancy dress all competing to be the top team on the day. Whilst enjoying all this fun we also hope to raise a huge amount for Children in Need as well.
