The Sixth Form College, Farnborough
The
Sixth Form College Farnborough prides itself on providing a comprehensive
programme of competitive inter college sports opportunities.
Lucy
Moore is the Further Education Sport Co-ordinator (FESCo) for The Sixth Form
College, Farnborough.
Wheelchair Basketball
Hampshire Harriers Wheelchair Basketball club led by Terry Marsh recently
visited Farnborough 6th form College to raise awareness of disability sport amongst
the sports students. 40 able bodied students took part in the wheelchair basketball activity, and some students even took on the Harriers in a 5v2
match. The students were unable to win any games such was the skill of the Harriers
players.
Volunteering
and Leadership Opportunities
Volunteering
and leadership has been a key area of development within the college over this
academic year. Though the college has been offering Sports Leaders Award
courses for over ten years, it was apparent that there was often little
formalised engagement of the students within the local area. Through the FESCo
programme, working links with the SSP and local schools have been established.
Our leaders are now a prominent and regular feature of clubs, events and
activities within the North East Hampshire SSP.
Dance
Leadership
Dance
Leader students at The Sixth Form College Farnborough demonstrated how they are
an inspiration to local school children as their four week dance project came
to a climax with a spectacular showcase held at Oak Farm Community School. The
showcase, entitled Oak Farm Family Dance Showcase presented a range of pieces
and involved over 50 local school children.
The work was a result of a four week project led by Dance Leaders from The
Sixth Form College Farnborough, in association with North East Hampshire School
Sports Partnership. Second year dance students prepared and delivered a dance
session every week in Cherrywood Community Primary School, Tower Hill Primary
School and St Bernadette's Catholic Primary School. The project aimed to build
links between further education and local schools by providing extra-curricular
dance activities.
Friends and family of the school pupils, who were invited to the performance,
were full of praise for the work. Subject Leader for Dance Leaders, Emily
Burke, said, “I am overwhelmed by the maturity of the leaders and how they have
applied their leadership skills when working with the school children, it is a
demonstration of the hard work and commitment that our students put into their
studies within the Performing Arts department.”
Staff at the schools who worked with the College students said they were a
fantastic role model for the school children and were impressed by their manner
of professionalism and sense of responsibility.

Dance
Workshops
20
year five pupils from local primary schools were invited into college for a
dance workshop hosted by the Dance Leaders Award students. The students lead
sessions in Hip-Hop and Jazz dancing which the primary school pupils loved. The
level of skill and enthusiasm shown by the DLA students was superb. Teachers
from all the schools voiced how excellent the sessions were and said that they
were keen to be involved in any future projects.
