Hampshire Year 5 & 6 Athletics Championships

On Tuesday 29th June 12 children journeyed to Southampton to represent the Oak Farm Family at the Hampshire Schools Year 5 & 6 Athletics Championships 2010.
The Oak Farm team comprised of 8 pupils from Grange Junior and 4 children from Cherrywood Primary.
The Oak Farm Family team were one of three teams entered by the North East Hampshire School Sports Partnership.
The championships were run as a multi dis-cipline competition and all children competed in a running event, a throwing event, a jumping event and a relay.
The all day event saw some spectacular sporting performances and some even more spectacular weather.
The standard was ex-ceptionally high and the Oak Farm children held their own against some of the top young athletes in the county. All our children showed excellent sportsmanship and physical endeavor, even when they were taking part in events which were not their first choice. It was ex-cellent to see the children supporting all those taking part in the NEHSSP teams, regardless of school.
The Oak Farm Family girls finished in 13th and the boys 14th place. This
meant that overall the
Oak Farm Family finished 14th out of 18 teams.
A massive well done to Aiden White, Ryan Goddard, Sam Buck, Koushal
Subba, James Halliwell, Mcauley Ford, Niamph Brereton, Nilam Thapa,
Linda Thapa, Ambika Rai, Aruna Thapa and Rachael Neal.
Big thanks must also go to Paul Shakespeare (Grange Junior) and Richard
Francis (PDM) for their support.
Golf at Farnborough Grange Infants
Over the summer term, children from Farnborough
Grange Infants have been able to take part in a lunchtime golf club delivered
by Little Golfers. The club has been supported by Big Lottery Funding and the
NEHSSP.
Golf is not necessarily a sport you would expect
to be a hit with KS1 children but the Farnborough Grange children have really
enjoyed it.
The children have been playing an adapted version
of the game called Tri-Golf.
Tri-Golf is leading the way by promoting the game
to the wider audience and making it accessible and fun. It's still golf but
it's made easier by using plastic clubs and rubber balls for infant, primary
and junior school aged children. Tri-Golf also encourages learning in other
areas; for example, maths, from scoring, literacy and citizenship (golf is a
game of honesty and self-regulation).
Oak Farm Family Dance Showcase
Wednesday 3rd March saw a spectacular dance showcase held at Oak Farm School.
Over 70 pupils from Grange Junior School, St Bernadette’s Primary, Cherrywood Primary and Tower Hill Primary performed a range of fantastic dances. In addition, students from the Sixth Form College and Oak Farm School showcased their dance talents.
For many of the schools, this was the culmination of a five week project led by the Dance Leaders from the Sixth Form College, Farnborough. Second year dance students prepared and delivered a dance session every week in Tower Hill, Cherrywood, and St Bernadette's.
Special commendations must also go to Mr Shakespeare of Grange Juniors who produced an excellent World Cup themed dance.
The large audience of friends and family which gathered to watch the performance were full of praise and really enjoyed the show.
Many thanks to all who attended and for the donations to Sport Relief.
Year 5 & 6 Girls Kick Off Family Festivals
The Oak Farm family girls football festival was the first family event of the year. The festival took place on the 6th October 2009 at Oak Farm Community School.
Teams from Cherrywood Primary, St Bernadette’s Primary and Grange Junior enthusiastically took part.
For many of the girls this was their first experience of competitive football. There was an excellent atmosphere of fair play and sportsmanship. All the teams should be very proud of their performances.
The triangular festival saw the girls from St Bernadette’s emerge as the overall winners.
Unfortunately, SSCo Lucy Moore was unable to attend the festival as she was delayed by a herd of cows. Thankfully, disaster was avoided as Jill Newbald (assistant PDM), David Moran (of Oak Farm School) and Gareth Byres (competition manager) came to the rescue.
Thanks guys!
An excellent time was had by all participants. Speaking after the festival, one teacher commented: “my girls totally loved the experience and want to know when the next one will be!”.
Cherrywood and Manor Battle for Netball First Place
Monday 30th November saw the rearranged Oak Farm family Yr 5 & 6 netball tournament take place at Oak Farm Community School.
Four teams took part in the tournament: Cherrywood, St Bernadette’s, Manor A and Manor B.
This was the first outing for the St Bernadette’s team. The children gave it their all and held their own against even the most experienced teams. It was great to see the St Bernadette’s team maintaining such good spirits and team work.
As soon as they arrived it was clear that the Cherrywood team were well drilled netball players. This high standard was maintained throughout the day. The girls from Cherrywood did extremely well. Especially considering that they had to compete in twice as many matches as the other teams.
Making a guest appearance, Manor Junior School brought two strong teams and some very skillful players. Mr Gunn and Mrs Gurteen also volunteered to umpire the whole tournament (and did an excellent job)!
Ultimately, the tournament came down to the final match between Manor A and Cherrywood.
The exciting final took place in front of a crowd of friends and family.
Some thrilling end to end netball saw points scored by both teams. However, as the game entered its second half, Manor A began to outpace Cherrywood and edged into the lead. Cherrywood were clearly tired and Manor continued to dominate.
As the final whistle blew Manor A emerged as the winners.
Well done to everyone who took part, hope to see you all at the next one!
Rugby Coaching from London Irish RFC
Throughout November and December, three schools from our family took part in rugby coaching provided by London Irish Rugby Club.
A range of children from Tower Hill, Farnborough Grange Infants and St Bernadette’s had the opportunity to take part as part of the NEHSSP community coaching program.
Though many of the children had experienced rugby before, teachers agreed that the professional coaching had added a new dimension to their rugby provision. Some of the teachers also felt that through observation of the sessions their personal confidence in teaching rugby had increased.
