Dancers perform for VE Day Celebration
This group of dancers were inspired by the Dance challenge have danced at various events since. They practise every week and have danced in school talent shows and were asked to perform at the VE Day Tea dance before half term. Several Old Peoples hames have asked if they could give a performance in other homes for those who could not travel. Well done Girls!
Year 10/11 Girls win Center Parcs National Schools Championships
The following players represented North East Hants School’s: Viki Williams, Hayley Duckett, Sophia Rapacioli, Emily Chappell and Vicky Nicholls. They all overcame strong competition from Talbot Heath School from Bournemouth in the final round to win their championship title.
Jeane Doy, who has been Robert Mays school’s badminton coach for the last five years, said, “The standard of badminton today was very high but the girls really battled. We’re absolutely thrilled to have won and to be bringing the trophy back to Odiham.”
The Center Parcs National Schools Championships trophy was awarded to all winners by Olympic silver medalist, Gail Emms and former European Champion, Donna Kellogg, who had both been at Center Parcs throughout the day watching the action.
National Schools Biathlon
Twenty two Robert May’s students were entered for the Southern qualifier for this event to be held at Aldershot Garrison and Stadium on 22nd November. Unfortunately due to illness or injury a number of our competitors were unable to participate thus depleting our teams from five to two.
On the day, conditions for the run, particularly in the morning, were appalling with lashing wind and rain. Despite this, our upper school contingent ran extremely well and in fact Ben Watson (Y9) and Neil King (Y11) produced the best times for their age groups (though conditions had improved a bit for Neil).
The majority of our contingent was from Year 7, all of who produced very worthwhile performances. Our ‘A’ Girl’s Team finished in 3rd place – Emily Merritt was 10th (Swim 7th /run 17th) and she was supported by Lucy Woodward (17th ) and Rebecca St Vincent (19th) Neil King finished in 2nd place overall (2nd swim) therefore qualifying for the National finals.
Dan Richards (Y10) was 4th in the swim and 7th in the run, thus placing 5th overall and also qualifying for the Nationals. Harriet Haugvik (Y9) was Robert May’s 3rd qualifier finishing in 6th place overall.
On rankings, it is possible that we may have further qualifiers, but whether we do or not, well done to all the Robert May’s students who participated in this event.

Young Leaders at Mayhill
On Thursday 19th November, a group of children from year six got the great chance to train as Young Leaders in the hall! The twenty-one year sixes who got chosen to do the training had a great time and in the afternoon even got to do a short session with some of Mr Marsh’s brave year threes. They had to plan a session which included: two warm ups, one main game and one cool down. Each Young Leader had to get into a pair with another Young Leader and together they had to play the games that they had planned to.
It was really fun and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Here is what some of the Leaders thought:
‘It was a great experience and I can’t wait to start teaching younger children.’ – Emily
‘I would like to have done more activities but it was really good anyway.’ – Lucy
‘I really enjoyed it and I want to do it again.’ – Elspeth
‘It was really fun and we got to miss a whole day of school!’ – Harry
As you can see we all had a great time!

Golfing Success
31 year 11 girls have taken part in 6 weeks of golf in their PE programme. A competition was held after the course had been completed resulting in generous awards being given by Oak Park. Katie Chiles won a set of golf clubs, while Lucy Topham, Emma Martin and Charlie Bullock all won a 10 week set of lessons. Beth Hullah and Beth Liddell also won a golf club each. Well done girls!
Neil King
Neil King, Year 11, will be representing Great Britain at the Biathle World Championships in Monaco later this month. We wish Neil the very best of luck and look forward to hearing how he fared upon his return.
Congratulations to Brad Marshall on his selection as a NEHSSP young sports ambassador for 2009/10.
Victoria Williams
Vicky has been selected by the All England Badminton Association to have a one year trial on the World class start programme. She is one of 4 girls in her age group in England to be on this programme.
She was playing in the All England Badminton Championships in early March 2009.
School Team
The KS3 Badminton Girls Team at Robert Mays School have reached the National Schools final to be held at Centre Parcs on Sunday 26th April. The squad is: Vicky Williams, Hayley Duckett, Sophia Rapacioli, Rachel Sworn, Jessica Pooley
Netball
An outstandingly talented bunch of netballers who have been extremely successful so far this season. The Pearls (U16A) are now in their third year of the Basingstoke League having moved up a division each season. They are currently at the top of Division 3 – an excellent achievement – and look set to be promoted once again to Division 2 for next season.
The Emeralds (U16B) have also been extremely successful this season. In their second year in the Basingstoke League they are currently 3rd in Division 5 with a very good chance of promotion to Division 4 next season if the team decides to stay together.
Girls Cross Country
We have had a brilliant start to the cross-country season with a pleasing number of runners attending our after school club. We have also tried to give as many runners as possible an opportunity to take part in our two friendly fixtures in order to gain experience of competition. In addition to the ‘friendly fixtures’ we have taken part in The District Championships; The Hampshire Schools Cup and The English Schools Cup which is open to all schools in England.
Senior District Championships
The championships took place at Lord Wandsworth College on one of the most challenging courses which we compete on. 16 schools took part and every girl that we took ran exceptionally well. Our U15 team (years 8 & 9) finished as District Champions with a very convincing team performance. Well done to all team members.
Rugby
There have been a huge number of boys attending Rugby club this year especially in the lower school. Unfortunately their have not been too many games so far due to football fixtures and not all schools being able to fit the games in this side of Christmas. Therefore there should be a hectic schedule of fixtures for all year groups after the holidays as soon as the nights draw out in order for us to play. A couple of year groups have managed to play a few games.
The year 10 team played a very able team in All Hallows who has been playing together throughout their school life. The boys tried hard but were out-performed.
The year 9 team have had two games so far. They played Weydon where they lost 22 – 17 and Wavell where they lost 29 – 19. They were two very close games where the result could have gone either way. In the end they just lost out on each occasion to a slightly more organised team but played some good Rugby along the way.
Boys Football
A new season and a new league for the year 9 team. They were undefeated in the league last year and have moved up to division 2. Straight away it was noticeable that the standard of play had definitely risen as well. The boys were subject to this in their very first game of the season where they came up against a very good team in Calthorpe Park.
League Results: Calthorpe Park 4 – 1 RMS, Weydon 2 – 1 RMS, RMS 4 – 2 Cove
To their credit the boys have improved greatly over the past couple of years and always try to play in the right way. Their commitment and effort has been exceptional and they have always been involved in good games were quite often the score line hasn’t reflected their performances.
Girls Football
This has been an extremely successful season so far for the U16 Girls’ Football Team. Apart from a disastrous League game against Yateley when we were able to field only 3 Year 11 players, the side have remained unbeaten this season.
We have now reached the final of the County Cup Competition and are due to play against The Petersfield School on December 12th. Because Hampshire is a large (and very successful) county, two teams go forward to the National Competition so we have this to look forward to after Christmas.
Basketball
The U16 squad has really progressed this season. Through attending training every week the girls are now performing at a very good standard and I have high hopes for the team in both the Aldershot & District School’s League and the County Cup. The squad beat Warblington very comfortably 49-14 in the first round of the County Cup and are now due to play Testwood on December 9th.
The U15’s have only started playing this season and have made excellent progress. There is no U15 League but some of the girls will play in the U16 League and I have arranged some friendly matches.
The squad played really well to beat Bishop Challoner 46-24 and Westgate 30-20 in their County Cup Competition and will now play Richard Aldworth in the next round.
