Young Ambassadors Attend Olympic Conference.

YA Derek RedmondTwo Young Ambassadors from the Wavell and Connaught School attended the Olympic Legacy Conference at the Hampshire Rosebowl on June 15th.

During the day the students were exposed to an the inspirational speaking of Derek Redmond and David Hemery. They learnt about new initiatives in sport and PE, discovered the ideas and thought behind the legacy programmes and explored new innovations to take back to their schools.

The two students were given an opportunity to attend workshops, visit the facilities and explore the Get Set website whilst working with PDM and SSCo's; who were on site to offer guidance advise and inspiration.

The day was overwhelmingly positive, "I had a great time, its was really interesting and gave me loads of ideas" enthused Silver Ambassador Emmanuel.

Indoor Athletics Success

Over 120 children from across Rushmoor, including the Connaught family, participated in the Sportshall Athletics festivals organised by NEHSSP during the first week of February 2010.

The Rushmoor Festival took place on Tuesday 2nd February 2010 at Farnborough Leisure Centre. 120 students in years 5 and 6 from 10 schools took part in the event which was supported by Sports Leaders from The Sixth Form College, Farnborough, and The Connaught School, Aldershot (See inside for more information on our ‘outstanding’ leaders).

The representatives from St Michaels School were there to defend the trophy for a third successive year. An admirable performance had them finish as runners up, only a handful of points behind the eventual winners. The key to St Michaels success was the controlled and sensible way they approached practise. The team were seen encouraging each other and setting themselves high, yet achievable targets for competition.

Connaught Sports Leaders "Outstanding"

LEADERSThe Sports Leaders from the Connaught School are setting an ‘outstanding’ example around North East Hants. The Young Leaders have won plaudits from teachers, parents, and NEHSSP staff at recent events and were described as “outstanding” at the Indoor Athletics where they were assisting with both coaching and officiating.

The Young Leaders have been training at the Connaught School with teacher Naomi Jukes and have proven themselves to be a great asset to the school and the NEHSSP. The students have recently helped with the OAA festival, sportshall athletics and mini multiskills festival. In addition to this they have helped out at clubs and attended training courses in cricket, skipping and dodgeball

They are now looking forward to events at Belle Vue, helping with the Dance Challenge and organising a multiskills festival for the Connaught Family.

Connaught Athlete Represents NEHSSP at County Championships

Year 9 Pupil Darren Hargrave turned in an outstanding performance at the recent NEHSSP Cross Country Championships finishing in 20th position out of almost 150 athletes

His performance earned him the right to represent the school and Sports Partnership at the County Championships at Anstey Park Alton. Competing against almost 200 athletes from across Hampshire Darren finished in a very respectable 73rd place.

Well done, we are all proud of you!

Beaumont Juniors Lift 5-a-side Trophy

Beaumont 5s

Beaumont Junior School, Newport Junior School and Park Primary represented the Connaught Family at the recent 5-a-side football tournament. The festival of football focuses on providing opportunities for children who do not always get a chance to represent school or club teams. It was great to see so many of our schools at the tournament and they all provided us with excellent performances and high entertainment. .

It was Beaumont Junior School who’s performance stood out, eventually finishing as WINNERS after a closely thought final. Newport Junior School and Park Primary School also had something to cheer about as they both proved themselves to be more than a match for the rest of Rushmoor!

All the children thoroughly enjoyed the tournament and once again the tournament proved to be one of the friendliest and most popular of the year.

Thanks must go to the three referees from the Wavell partnership who officiated very well under great pressure from a competitive audience. A huge thanks also to all the parents, teachers and staff who attended or supported the tournament, we hope you enjoyed it! We could not do it without your support!

Success for St Michaels Infants at Orienteering Festival

The first Infant family event of the year took place at Connaught on Feb 3rd. Park and St michael's were competing for the crown of OAA family chapions. The following report was produced by one of the many parents there to cheer on their children! Thanks Tim!

Year 2 children from St. Michaels infants school have taken top honours at an orienteering festival organised by the North East Hampshire Schools Sports Partnership. The winning team of Stanley, Ellen and Nathan completed the course in the shortest time, reading a map and navigating their route between a set of 10 observation points. Another team from St. Michaels
Infants, Luke and William, came in as runners-up, with the next three places going to teams from Park Infant School.
More than 25 children aged 6 and 7 took part in the event, at Connaught Secondary School in Aldershot, with thanks to the PE staff and sports leaders at the school.

Sports Leaders Visit St Michaels Junior School for Team Building Day

Nine young sports leaders from the Connaught School were delighted to be asked to attend a team building day at St Michaels Junior School. The leaders were asked to deliver a range of activities centering around, team work, communication, understanding and togetherness. The Sports Leaders spliti into three groups each focusing on different areas with three very different activities. One group asked the teams form St Michaels to build the highest tower they could to support an egg using only spagetti and selotape! Another group gave the children a small amount of PE equipment and asked the children to cross the hall without touching the floor. The third and final group set up an aciitiy in which the children had to solve a word problem through careful verbal communication. The children at St Michaels had a great time and participated in all the activities with great enthusiasm.

Tag Unites Connaught Family

It was great to see so many parties come together for the family Tag Rugby Tournaments at Connaught on Monday 9th November. Three Newport Tagteams from St Michael's Junior School and three from Newport Junior School were joined by SSCo Andy Munnings, 2 year 11 young leaders from The Connaught School and Coaches from Aldershot and Fleet RFU.

The 60 competitors were split into year 3/4 and year 5/6 for coaching session concentrating on ball handling skills, tagging, and development of rules before the children were given opportunities to compete against one another.

For many of the year 3 and 4 children it was the very first time they had played in a tag rugby match! Excitement was at fever pitch and despite the temperature falling to the lowest point this winter a wonderful time has had by all. Many of the players are now looking forward to more and more opportunities to get involved in tag rugby.

Connaught Football Festival Gets Over 80 Children

The Connaught Family Football Festival was the first family event of the year and took place on Thursday 8th October Emanuelat St Michaels Junior School.

The event featured both girls and boys teams from three family schools with a total of 82 children taking part, including 1 referee from The Connaught School. The tournament featured three teams form host St Michael’s C of E Junior School, three from Newport Juniors and 2 from Park Primary School.

The tournament featured football of the highest standard in both the girls and boys categories. Park Primary emerged victorious in a tightly fought girls tournament and Newport A finished on top in the boys. All teams went home happy and proud of their performances.

Also featuring at the tournament was Emmanuel Muyambuki (Pictured left). The year 9 student gave up representing his school at a football fixture to help out, after 2 late withdrawals due to illness and injury left SSCo Andy Munnings without a referee! Emanuel’s performance was excellent. Despite heavy pressure form very enthusiastic parents, he officiated consistently and with great accuracy and strength.

One of the most noticeable features of the event was the overwhelming sense of fair play and friendship. On each pitch 1 child was selected for the “Sportsmanship” award, although choosing a winner in such a supportive environment proved very hard indeed! The winners were identified for qualities such as encouragement, friendship, fair play and respect.

St Michael's Junior School Snap Up Quicksticks Opportunities

St Michael's Junior School were quick to up sticks by arranging a Quicksticks Inset and entering an up coming tournament. The enthusiasm of Jackie Mead led to the opportunity as she arranged for a Laura Garston of Yateley Hockey Club to deliver an Inset to the school, and made it available to all of the family. A big thank you goes to Jackie for making it available to us.

Two year 6 teams represented the family at the NEHSSP Netball Tournament on Tuesday 22nd September at The Wavell School. Both teams had only been practising for a couple of weeks, yet performed admirably demonstrating great passing and shooting skills. It was great to see the netballers enthusiasm after the group events as they waited to watch an exciting final. Great behaviour was demonstrated by both schools. Well done all!
