Young Ambassadors Attend Olympic Conference.

YA Derek RedmondTwo Young Ambassadors from the Wavell and Connaught School attended the Olympic Legacy Conference at the Hampshire Rosebowl on June 15th.

During the day the students were exposed to an the inspirational speaking of Derek Redmond and David Hemery. They learnt about new initiatives in sport and PE, discovered the ideas and thought behind the legacy programmes and explored new innovations to take back to their schools.

The two students were given an opportunity to attend workshops, visit the facilities and explore the Get Set website whilst working with PDM and SSCo's; who were on site to offer guidance advise and inspiration.

The day was overwhelmingly positive, "I had a great time, its was really interesting and gave me loads of ideas" enthused Silver Ambassador Emmanuel.

St Josephs Primary Win Indoor Athletics

Over 120 children from across Rushmoor, including the Wavell family, participated in the Sportshall Athletics festivals organised by NEHSSP during the first week of February 2010.

Representing the family were teams from St Peters C of E Junior School and St Josephs RC Primary School. Both school performed wonderfully and were both high scorers, with a only handful of pints separating the top four teams. It was St Josephs Primary School that finished on top. The school has a proud history in the competition having won it three times previously. Excellent individual performances could be seen by all of the athletes, who worked as a team, encouraging each other, offering words of support and encouragement.

The Festival took place on Tuesday 2nd February 2010 at Farnborough Leisure Centre. 120 students in years 5 and 6 from 10 schools took part in the event which was supported by Sports Leaders from The Sixth Form College, Farnborough, and The Connaught School, Aldershot . St Josephs will now represent the NEHSSP in the County Championships at the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth on March 29th.

Wavell Basketball Sets the Standard

The Wavell School produced an outstanding performance at the NEHSSP basketball tournaments in January. It was not just one winning team for The Wavell, but three! The winning teams were the Year 9 Boys, Year 9 Girls and Year 7/8 Boys. Also representing the school for the very first time were the Year 7/8 girls basketball team. The girls approached the tournament in a positive manner and showed great improvement throughout’ scoring more and more regularly as the tournament went on.

The Wavell School has a long tradition of success in basketball and it great to see the future is looking bright, not only with the boys success but the emergence of a new team. The Year 7/8 girls had a great time and are looking forward to a great deal more to come!

Cross Country Success

The Wavell School entered the NEHSSP cross country event with high expectations—but those were blown out of the water by the incredible performances of their athletes. Of the seven entrants an incredible 5 finished in the top twenty and qualified for the district championships, with one athlete, Scott Stephens, going beyond that! (See page below for further details) The other representatives at the district championship were Matt Munday, Sarah Gaylard and Katherine Laws-Bates.

Well done to all seven athletes. Fantastic Work!

Wavell Student Represents Family at District and Regional Competiton

Year 7 Student Scott Stephens put in a fantastic performance at the recent Southern Counties Cross Country Championships.

Having finished 6th in the NEHSSP event and 16th in districts the Wavell School had high hopes for Scott, and he did not let them down. A long a and difficult event was made to look easy by the athlete as he made short work of the course.

Well done Scott!

Talavera Shine at 5-a-side

St Josephs and Talavera represented the Wavell Family at the recent 5-a-side tournament at Aldershot Sports Garrison. The festival of football focuses on providing opportunities for children who do not always get a chance to represent school or club teams. It is one of the most popular and enjoyable events in the NEHSSP calendar. It was great to see two of our schools at the tournament and they both provided us with excellent performances and high entertainment.

It was Talavera Junior School who’s performance stood out, eventually finishing as runners up in a closely thought final. Also representing the family were 3 referees, who impressed so much, were invited back to officiate the Hart tournament the following week. It was two of the boys first experience of refereeing a competitive game and they grew in stature throughout. They are now looking forward to gaining more experience and becoming qualified referees.

Multiskills Tournament gets Infants Moving

The now extremely successful annual Infant Family Multiskills Festival took place in February, with almost 50 children taking part.

The infant children, aged just 6 and 7, were coached and encouraged along the way by The Wavell Young Leaders, who ran the show from start to finish! Representing the family were North Farnborough Infant School, St Josephs Primary School and Marlborough Infant School. The children took part in a range of activities focusing on the ABC’s of movement.

Agility, Balance and Coordination are the areas in focus throughout nationwide multiskills festivals and clubs. These basic skills enable children to have a grounding in all sports before moving to sports specific skills as they get older. The family multiskills festival is now in its fourth year and remains one of the most popular events in the infant calendar. Next years event planning is already under way with Wavell Young Leaders keen to develop their role.

With the NEHSSP setting up academies across the partnership the focus of multiskills is set to be raised yet further. It is an excellent way to recognize ‘Gifted and Talented’ children in PE at an early age.

The NEHSSP is leading the way with the development of these academies, expect to hear more very soon.

Wavell Young Leaders Lead the Way!

LeadersYoung Leaders from the Wavell Family have been leading the way across the NEHSSP, demonstrating a commitment to sport that goes way beyond the classroom.

At recent NEHSSP events leaders from across the family have been a shinning example. Coaching teams, leading warm up sessions and officiating tournaments have been top of the agenda for a core of dedicated volunteers.

It is testament to the students themselves who have approached the PE department, PLTs and SSCo for volunteer hours.

During the term Wavell students have been coaching at South Farnborough Infant School, refereeing at tag rugby festivals and fixtures, assisting with netball and helping with the organizing and running of family events. We also have newly qualified leaders at St Joseph’s RC Primary School.

From January all young leaders in the family will be able to record volunteer hours in ‘Volunteering and Leadership Passports’ and earn rewards for their achievements and commitment.

Exciting New Playtimes at Talavera Infants

Most children look forward to playtimes at school, but for the children at Talavera Infants the excitement is even greater! The school have invested in new play equipment and playground markings. The SS Talavera has dropped anchor and multiskills markings have been added to the new surface.

The new markings encourage children to develop their ABCs (Agility, Balance and Coordination). Children are given an opportunity to think of their own activities and games. The children have been developing playtime and multiskills and have taken part in external CPD, Inset Training and have a successful club in place. The children and staff are looking to further develop playtime throughout the year.

Wind and Rain Fails to Stop Junior Cross Country Festival!

The appalling weather on 13th July was unable to dampen the spirits of the Wavell Family as they came in huge numbers for the annual Cross Country Festival with 100 athletes taking part. The weather held off all day, until the arrival of the first competitors!!

Despite the conditions the children of St Josephs Primary School, St Peters Junior School and Talavera Junior School competed with enthusiasm. The boys from year 3 and 4 were first to go, followed by the girls. It was then the turn of the girls and boys from year 5 and 6. Each of the four races was over an incredible distance of 2.5km with every athlete completing the course.

The honours were shared between the three Schools with St Peters taking the 3/4 boys and 3/4 girls titles. Talavera Juniors had the winner in the 5/6 boys and St Joes in the 5/6 girls. The overall winners of the event were St Joes. A huge a well done to all involved and thanks to all the wet parents, friends, and teachers would stayed through the event.
